Corks Crew Cellars review the Sarge Riesling and Quatre Papillons
Chris Sargeant is one of the most talented winemakers in our region. Making award winning wines at both Brown Magpie and Terindah Estate he established a reputation for consistent, high quality wines true to their intended styles.
He has since established his own label 'Sarge', and has kept the golden run going. Sourcing fruit for his wines from Geelong, he is clear about the style he wants from each wine and is nailing it. Geelong riesling will never be Clare Valley Riesling and there is no point trying to make it so. Chris is making a style that is broader and more textural, and suits the fruit he is sourcing perfectly.
His Cabernet blend, 'Quatre Papillons' is not trying to be a Bordeaux copy cat. He is leaning towards the Cabernet wines of the Loire Valley. Low (if any) oak, bright juicy flavours while retaining great varietal fruit characters.
This is a great chance to try the wines which are quite unique for the region and have a bit of a chat to Chris about his philosophy.
